Shipping ministry to issue tenders for roping in
consultant for Colachel port by March
Mumbai, February 17: Shipping ministry
will issue tenders for appointment of a consultant by March for the proposed
transhipment port at Colachel in Tamilnadu, said Shri Nitin Gadkari, union
minister of shipping and road transport, Wednesday.
Colachel in Tamil Nadu, Sagar in West Bengal and Wadhawan at Dahanu in Maharashtra will be the three new Greenfield ports on the Indian coast, he said at an interactive session on ports and shipping at the Make in India event at BKC.
“We have already initiated investments worth Rs 80,000 crore for mechanisation, modernisation and computerisation of ports under Sagarmala project,” he said.
Colachel is being promoted as transhipment hub because of deep drought of 18.5 metres as compared to Vizhinjam in Kerala, N. Muruganandam, Managing Director, Indian Ports Association told the audience.
Vizhinjam was also mulled to be promoted as a transhipment hub to capture the container business. Several international ports like Singapore and Jebel Ali have more than one transhipment hubs.
Gadkari also pointed out that the Cabinet has recently approved a 20% subsidy for shipbuilding, which will boost the ship building industry, apart from sanctioning of infrastructure status for the shipbuilding industry.
Gadkari also pointed out the inland waterway bill will shortly get Rajya Sabha nod, paving the way for of 111 river ports.

Inland Waterways to be the game changer in
industrial development - Nitin Gadkari

Gadkari today emphasized on the need to reduce logistics cost, which would be
imperative for the success of Make in India initiative. He was speaking at
Sectoral Seminar on ‘Opportunities in Shipping and Port Sectors’ as part of the
Make In India Week in Mumbai.
Shri Gadkari apprised the participants that a lot of initiatives including mechanization, modernization and capacity addition have already been undertaken in the Port sector with a massive investment of Rs. 80,000 crore. Similarly an Indian Port Rail Company has been established with a thrust on rail road connectivity. He informed the participants that 3 new ports i.e. Vadhavan (Maharashtra) with draft of 18 mtrs , Sagar (West Bengal) with draft of 14.5 mtrs and Kolachel (Tamil Nadu) with draft of 18.5 mtrs are being developed.
Shri Gadkari said there was a renewed focus on developing Inland Waterways which is globally recognized as fuel efficient, cost effective and environment friendly mode of transport. He said work was also underway to use LNG as bunker fuel which would reduce the overall cost for the sector On the river Ganga, the Shipping Ministry is building three multi-modal hubs at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Sahibganj in Jharkhand and Haldia in West Bengal. He said there is a proposal to build 2,000 water ports over the next 5 years.
Mr Amitabh Verma, Chairman, Inland Waterway Authority of India said that one of the reasons for inland waterways not being optimally tapped was due to the focus of post Independent governments on speed – which led to higher allocations in roads and railways development.

Shri Nitin Gadkari launches website of Maritime
India Summit 2016
Shri Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways launched the Website for Maritime India
Summit 2016www.maritimeinvest.in at the Ports and Shipping seminar at Make in
India (MII) Summit today. The Maritime India Summit is
scheduled to be held in Mumbai in April this year. The user
friendly website launched today will facilitate investors and participants to
access detailed information about the summit, including registrations. Launching
the website Shri Gadkari said, “A strong maritime sector will create economic
growth and jobs. Realizing this potential is duty towards the nation. I
am committed to bring the sector into focus; to achieve our goal of port led

Maritime
India Summit 2016 (MIS 2016), is the maiden global summit
being organised by the Ministry of Shipping in April, to unleash the
potential of Indian Maritime Sector. The summit will be inaugurated by the Prime
Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 14 April 2016 at the Bombay Convention
and Exhibition Centre in Mumbai. MIS 2016 will comprise of an Investors’ Summit
on 14–15 April 2016 , along with exhibition and demo sessions spread over
three days. The Republic of Korea is the partner country for the MIS 2016 and
will be represented by a high level ministerial and business delegation. More
