Model Libraries
The Scheme “National Mission on Libraries – Upgradation of Libraries -
providing services to the public” has been approved with a total outlay of Rs.
400 Crores was for the 12th Plan period.
Under the Scheme, the Mission will upgrade infrastructure of selected libraries
and upgrade technology in 35 State Central Libraries, 35 District Libraries and
the 6 Libraries under the Ministry of Culture.
The district libraries approved for upgradation as Model Libraries areas is

Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat
Zonal Cultural Centres under
Ministry of Culture are organizing National Cultural Exchange Programmes (NCEP)
all over India to develop and promote the rich diversity and uniqueness of
various arts of India and to upgrade and enrich consciousness of the people
about their cultural heritage. The North-East Zone Cultural Center is also
organizing Octave festival of North-East in other parts of the country for
promotion of the rich cultural heritage of the region. This programmes help to
enhance interaction between people living in different states.
Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT) under Ministry of Culture organizes variety of training programmes for teachers and workshops and camps for students belonging to various parts of the country. CCRT has imparted training to 156349 teachers belonging to various parts of the country. 673508 students have been enriched with interstate cultural understanding and ethos of the country.
Other organizations under Ministry of Culture viz. Sangeet Natak Akademi, Sahitya Akademi and Lalit Kala Akademi conduct various activities like National Camps, National Exhibition of Art, Camps, workshops, cultural performances, symposia, poets’ meets, etc. throughout the country.

Contribution to UNESCO for
Promotion of Culture
The Government of India, as a member state, makes its obligatory
contribution to the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural
Organisation (UNESCO) towards protection of the world cultural and natural
heritage as well as safeguarding the intangible cultural heritage etc. The
details of the contribution made by the Ministry of Culture during the period
2012 to 2015 till date for its above said cultural activities are as under:

Though, the assessment of the objective of such contributions to the UNESCO is
a subjective matter and it is not feasible to quantify its benefits as the
mandate of the UNESCO include protection / safeguarding of tangible and
intangible cultural and natural heritage including protecting, promoting
diverse cultural traditions worldwide as well as spreading the recognition and
importance of these cultural heritage, usage/ implementation of best techniques
& practices of conservation & preservation etc., development of
training materials/ modules, organising training sessions/ workshops etc.
Moreover, as far as India is concerned, our engagement with UNESCO has helped
in a variety of ways towards enhancing the visibility and importance of our
rich cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible, which has, inter-alia,
added to tourist arrivals and revenue generation. India has also been
elected as a member of its various organizations and bodies including
Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural
Heritage (Also Vice-Chair for 2014-15), Subsidiary Committee to the UNESCO’s
1970 Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import,
Export and transfer of ownership of Cultural Property and World Heritage
Committee. UNESCO’s office in New Delhi also helps/ executes the
activities that benefit the Government of India including States and various
organisations.
It may also be added that so far UNESCO has included our 32 Monuments/
Sites in its World Heritage List. Apart from that, UNESCO has also
inscribed 11 elements from India in its Representative List on Humanity. Also,
in the Memory of the World Programme of the UNESCO, seven elements from India
have also been included so far. All these bring added visibility to India
in the world.
As
regards financial assistance from UNESCO, though UNESCO implements some schemes
for providing limited grants to stakeholders on specific projects relating to
cultural diversity, promotion of culture etc., but no such grant has been
received to India during the last three years and the current year under these
schemes.

Programmes on Awareness of
Indian Culture
The mandate of the Ministry of
Culture is to preserve, promote and protect the rich tangible and intangible
cultural heritage of the country which it fulfils through its organizations.
The organizations work in the area of dance, music, theatre, art, literature,
museums, archives, libraries, archaeology, anthropology, folk culture and
Buddhist traditions.
The various organizations of the Ministry undertake activities throughout the year in accordance with their mandate. Their programmes are well publicized in the social, electronic and print media. The organizations make special efforts to involve youth and children so as to connect them with various aspects of Indian culture. The programmes conducted by these organizations cater to the needs of all sections of society and are aimed at promoting a sense of pride about India’s ancient and diverse culture amongst the citizens of India.

Adarsh Smarak Schme for
Conservation of Monuments
The
Archaeological Survey of India has identified 25 monuments for Adarsh Smarak
Scheme for upgradation of tourist related amenities. The details of monuments
are at Annexure. The salient features of the scheme are as under:

make monument visitor friendly.
2. To
upgrade/provide wash rooms, drinking water, signages, cafeteria and wi-fi
facility
3. To
provide Interpretation and audio-video centres
4. To
streamline waste water and garbage disposal and rain water harvesting system
5. To
make monument accessible to differently abled
6. To
implement Swachh Bharat Abhiyan
