Defence Minister Felicitates NCC Bravehearts
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has
called upon the Director General National Cadets Corps (DG NCC) to consider
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan as one of the special porgrammes and theme for the year
2016. Speaking during his visit to the NCC Republic Day Camp 2016 at Delhi
Cantt on 21st January 2016 he said each team of the NCC formation choose at
least one village or area not only to keep it clean but also to create
awareness of Swachh Bharat Campaign.
Commenting that sports has always been a
vital ingredient of the NCC curriculum,the Minister complimented the NCC in
entering the Limca Book of Records on International Day of Yoga on 21 June 2015
and winning the Jawahar Lal Nehru Hockey Tournament.Wishing the Girl Cadets
slated to scale the Mount Everest in May/June 2016 all the very best, he also
highlighted that the NCC is doing a great service to the Nation by transforming
the ‘Youth of the Nation’.Shri Parrikar also stated that the initiatives taken by DGNCC to revise the training philosophy and the syllabus to keep pace with current socio-economic demands and aspirations of all stakeholders of the country and youth is a step in the right direction.Shri Parrikar conferred Raksha Mantri Padak and Commendation Cards to NCC Cadets for their exemplary performance and devotion to duty at an impressive function. Earlier the Defence Minister was received by the DG NCC on the occasion.
This year the RM Padak has been awarded to Senior Under Officer Satabdi Roy of Odisha Directorate. Raksha Mantri Commendation Cards have been awarded to Senior Under Officer Sonika (Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana & Chandigarh Directorate), Senior Under Officer Milan Khan (West Bengal & Sikkim Directorate) and Senior Cadet Capt S.M Shahid (Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh Directorate).
The Minister also visited the Flag Area where he was briefed by the young cadets about their respective States highlighting various social themes.

IAF’s Participation in Republic Day Parade 2016
India would be celebrating its 67th
Republic Day on 26 January 2016. As always, the Indian Air Force (IAF) will be
an integral part of the Armed Forces’ contingents during the Parade. The IAF’s
participation shall consist of the aerial flypast, a marching contingent
accompanied by the IAF Band, and a tableau.
The flypast comprises 27 aircraft of the Indian Air Force. Leading the parade would be the traditional ‘Ensign’ formation comprising four Mi-17 V5 helicopters in an inverted ‘Y’ formation. The second and the main phase will be led by ‘Chakra’ formation of three Mi-35 helicopters in ‘Vic’ formation, followed by three C-130J Super Hercules aircraft. This will be followed by the Globe formation comprising one C-17 aircraft along with two Su-30 MKI aircraft. The first fighter formation would comprise five Jaguar aircraft in the shape of an Arrowhead, followed by five MiG-29 upgrade aircraft in similar formation. The Sukhoi formation comprising three Su-30 MKI aircraft will fly in the last phase. The end of the parade will be marked by a single Su-30 MKI aircraft, pulling up vertically in front of the dais and carrying out the signature ‘Vertical Charlie’ rolls.
The Air Force Marching Contingent comprises four officers, including two women officers and 144 airmen. The Air Force contingent will march on the tunes of the Air Force Band.
The Band consists of 72 musicians. Three Drum Majors would play appropriate tunes selected especially for the occasion. While marching past the saluting dais, the band will play the tune ‘Galaxy Riders’.
The theme for the IAF tableau is ’Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Operations by the Indian Air Force: In Service of the Nation and Beyond’. The design would showcase the IAF’s role in Uttarakhand, Kashmir, Yemen and Nepal rescue and relief operations by displaying models of C-17, C-130 and Mi-17 V5 aircraft. The IAF’s contribution in recent HADR missions has been exemplary and has earned accolades for the Service. Through this theme, IAF would be able to re-affirm its commitment to this crucial role in the service of the Nation, and increasingly, beyond our borders as well.

Indian Warships Visit Colombo, Sri Lanka
Indian Naval ships Vikramaditya and
Mysore are on an official visit to Colombo from 21 -23 Jan 16. The ships are
part of the Indian Navy’s Western Fleet based at Mumbai.
During the visit, the warships will have professional interactions with the Sri Lankan Navy for further enhancing already close co-operation between the two Navies. In addition, a number of sports and social engagements are planned, which are aimed at strengthening ties and mutual understanding between the two Navies. On departure from Colombo, the ships will participate in a Passage Exercise with the Sri Lankan Navy.
The Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet, Rear Admiral Ravneet Singh, NM, is flying his flag onboard the Vikramaditya. INS Vikramaditya is commanded by Captain Krishna Swaminathan and INS Mysore is commanded by Capt M Paul Samuel.
India and Sri Lanka are close maritime neighbours with strong and extremely cordial defence and diplomatic relations. The two navies regularly interact during Exercise SLINEX, which is held every alternate year. Indian Navy also hosts a number of trainees from the Sri Lankan Navy in various professional schools. The current visit seeks to highlight the importance accorded by India to bilateral relations with Sri Lanka and to strengthen the existing bonds between the two countries.
INS Vikramaditya is one of the two aircraft carriers operated by the Indian Navy. A state-of-the-art ship, Vikramaditya is equipped with a variety of integral weapons and sensors and operates a versatile range of high-performance aircraft, such as the MiG 29K fighters, KM 31 AEW helicopters, multi-role Seakings and utility Chetaks. The ship is over 285 meters long and 60 meters wide. Her 23 decks scale a height of 60 meters. She is accompanied by indigenously constructed INS Mysore, a frontline missile destroyer.
