The summary of the Index of Eight
Core Industries (base: 2004-05) is given at the Annexure.
The Eight Core Industries
comprise nearly 38 % of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial
Production (IIP). The combined Index of
Eight Core Industries stands at 202.9 in March, 2017, which was 5.0 % higher compared
to the index of March, 2016. Its cumulative growth during April
to March, 2016-17 was 4.5 %.
Coal
Coal production (weight: 4.38 %) increased by 10.0 % in March, 2017
over March, 2016. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2016-17
increased by 3.6 % over corresponding period of previous year.
Crude Oil
Crude Oil production (weight: 5.22 %) increased by 0.9 % in March, 2017
over March, 2016. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2016-17
declined by 2.5 % over the corresponding period of previous year.
Natural Gas
The Natural Gas production (weight: 1.71 %)
increased by 8.3 % in March, 2017 over March, 2016. Its cumulative
index during April to March, 2016-17 declined by 1.1 % over the corresponding period of previous year.
Refinery Products (93% of Crude
Throughput)
Petroleum Refinery production (weight: 5.94%)
declined by 0.3 % in March, 2017 over March, 2016. Its cumulative
index during April to March, 2016-17
increased by 5.4 % over the corresponding period of previous year.
Fertilizers
Fertilizer production (weight: 1.25%) declined by 0.8 %
in March, 2017 over March, 2016. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2016-17 increased by 1.8 % over the corresponding
period of previous year.
Steel (Alloy +
Non-Alloy)
Steel production (weight:
6.68%) increased by
11.0 % in March, 2017 over March,
2016. Its cumulative index during April to March, 2016-17 increased by 9.3 % over the corresponding period of previous year.
Cement
Cement production (weight: 2.41%) declined by
6.8 % in March,
2017 over March, 2016. Its
cumulative index during April to March, 2016-17 declined by 1.3 % over the corresponding period of previous year.
Electricity
Electricity generation
(weight: 10.32%) increased by 5.9 %
in March, 2017 over March, 2016. Its
cumulative index during April to March, 2016-17 increased by 5.1 % over the corresponding period of previous year.
Note 1: Data are provisional. Revision has been
made based on revised data received for corresponding month of previous year in
respect of Coal, Crude Oil, Natural Gas, Fertilizers, Steel, Cement and
Electricity. Accordingly, indices for the month of March, 2016 have been
revised.
Note 2: Since October, 2016, Electricity generation
data from Renewable sources is also included.
Note 3: Release of the index for April,
2017 will be on Wednesday, 31st May, 2017.
