Review for the month of September, 2015 


The official Wholesale Price Index for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2004-05=100) for the month of September, 2015 declined by 0.1 percent to 176.6 (provisional) from 176.7 (provisional) for the previous month.


INFLATION

The annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, stood at -4.54% (provisional) for the month of September, 2015 (over September, 2014) as compared to -4.95% (provisional) for the previous month and 2.38% during the corresponding month of the previous year.  Build up inflation rate in the financial year so far was 0.28% compared to a build up rate of 2.61% in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Inflation for important commodities / commodity groups is indicated in Annex-1 and Annex-II.
The movement of the index for the various commodity groups is summarized below:-

PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 20.12%)

The index for this major group rose by 0.4 percent to 252.4 (provisional) from 251.5 (provisional) for the previous month.  The groups and items which showed variations during the month are as follows:-

The index for 'Food Articles'  group rose by 0.6 percent to 264.0 (provisional) from 262.3 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of arhar (6%), fish-inland (4%), pork, bajra, gram and urad (2% each) and fruits & vegetables,   condiments & spices, wheat, barley and ragi (1% each).  However, the price of poultry chicken (5%), beef & buffalo meat,      tea, fish-marine and maize (2% each) and egg, jowar and moong (1% each) declined.

The index for 'Non-Food Articles'  group rose by 1.3 percent to 220.2 (provisional) from 217.4 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of cotton seed (13%), raw silk (9%), guar seed (4%), groundnut seed, raw jute and linseed (3% each), sunflower, castor seed and rape & mustard seed (2% each) and soyabean and fodder (1% each).  However, the price of gingelly seed (9%), raw rubber (4%) and safflower (kardi seed) and copra (coconut) (3% each) declined.

The index for  'Minerals'  group declined by 4.3 percent to  234.1(provisional) from 244.6 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of zinc concentrate (10%), sillimanite and crude petroleum (9% each), phosphorite (6%),      manganese ore (4%), magnesite and iron ore (3% each).  However, the price of copper ore (9%) and chromite (8%) moved up.

FUEL & POWER (Weight 14.91%)

The index for this major group declined by 1.7 percent to 175.6 (provisional) from 178.7 (provisional)  for the previous month due to lower price of  aviation turbine fuel (14%), furnace oil (10%), petrol (5%), high speed diesel and bitumen (4% each), kerosene (3%) and electricity (industry) (2%).  However, the price of electricity (agricultural) (12%), electricity (commercial) (3%) and electricity (domestic) (2%) moved up.

MANUFACTURED PRODUCTS (Weight 64.97%)

The index for this major group rose by 0.1 percent to 153.3 (provisional) from 153.1 (provisional) for the previous month. The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the month are as follows:-

The index for 'Food Products' group rose by 0.8 percent to 173.0 (provisional) from 171.7 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of sugar (3%), sunflower oil, oil cakes, tea leaf (unblended) and mixed spices (2% each) and      gur, cotton seed oil, rice bran oil, mustard & rapeseed oil and groundnut oil (1% each).  However, the price of sugar confectionary (6%), tea dust (blended) and copra oil (3% each), processed prawn (2%) and palm oil, soyabean oil, bakery products, khandsari, tea leaf (blended), powder milk and sooji (rawa) (1% each) declined.

The index for 'Beverages, Tobacco & Tobacco Products' group declined by 0.1 percent to 206.2 (provisional) from 206.4 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of  dried tobacco and soft drinks & carbonated water (1% each).

The index for 'Textiles' group declined by 0.4 percent to 140.1 (provisional) from 140.6 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of man made fibre, man made fabric and cotton yarn (1% each).  However, the price of  jute sacking bag  (6%), gunny and hessian cloth (4%),  jute sacking cloth (3%) and  jute yarn (2%) moved up.

The index for 'Wood & Wood Products' group declined by 2.2 percent to 194.2 (provisional) from 198.5 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of  plywood & fibre board (5%).

The index for 'Paper & Paper Products' group rose by 0.1 percent to 154.9 (provisional) from 154.7 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of printing and writing paper and paper rolls (1% each).

The index for 'Leather & Leather Products' group rose by 0.3 percent to 145.4 (provisional) from 144.9 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of  leather footwear (1%).

The index for 'Rubber & Plastic Products' group declined by 0.5 percent to 148.0 (provisional) from 148.7 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of  plastic products (1%).

The index for 'Chemicals & Chemical Products' group declined by 0.3 percent to 150.8 (provisional) from 151.3 (provisional) for the previous month due to lower price of rubber chemicals (3%), synthetic resin and safety  matches/ match box (2% each) and non-cyclic compound, antacid and digestive preparations, thinner and basic organic chemicals (1% each).  However, the price of agarbattis, ayurvedic medicines, pesticides, lacquer & varnishes, pigment & pigment intermediates, explosives and ammonium sulphate (1% each) moved up

The index for 'Non-Metallic Mineral Products' group rose by 0.8 percent to 177.0 (provisional) from 175.6 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of grey cement (2%) and polished granite and slag  cement (1% each).  However, the price of marbles (6%) declined.

The index for 'Basic Metals, Alloys & Metal Products' group rose by 0.5 percent to 154.9 (provisional) from 154.1 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of rounds and wire rods (3% each), pencil  ingots, sheets and plates (2% each) and gold & gold ornaments, billets, pig iron, steel castings, iron castings, joist & beams, CRC, rebars and     angles (1% each).  However, the price of steel structures (4%), zinc (3%) and ferro chrome, iron & steel wire, steel rods,     ferro manganese, gp/gc sheets, brass, copper / copper ingots and steel: pipes & tubes (1% each) declined.

The index for 'Transport, Equipment & Parts' group rose by 0.1 percent to 137.8 (provisional) from 137.7 (provisional) for the previous month due to higher price of  railway brake gear (1%).  However, the price of railway  axle & wheel (2%) and     auto rickshaw/tempo/matador (1%) declined.


FINAL INDEX FOR THE MONTH OF JULY, 2015 (BASE YEAR: 2004-05=100)

For the month of July, 2015, the final Wholesale Price Index for ‘All Commodities’ (Base: 2004-05=100) stood at 177.6 as compared to 177.5 (provisional) and annual rate of inflation based on final index stood at -4.00 percent as compared to -4.05 percent (provisional) respectively as reported on 14.08.2015.
