Shri Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary inaugurates the 70th Raising Day celebration of Directorate of Coordination Police Wireless
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary inaugurated the 70th Raising Day celebration of the Directorate of Coordination Police Wireless (DCPW) here today. During the occasion, senior officers of Home Ministry were also present.
During the celebration, Shri Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary said that the Directorate has achieved several milestones in its long journey of 70 years. Referring to DCPW, he said that such an old organization is a great asset to Government of India, as it instills values of rich wireless cultural heritage as well as safeguards the police communication establishments in the country.
Shri Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary said that the Directorate has already geared up its activities by establishing a nationwide satellite network, digitization of police wireless in the country and contributing in international forums like International Telecommunication Union. He also said that the Directorate is playing a pivotal role for balancing dynamics in police requirements, with regards to global technological developments.
Shri Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary said that in the present scenario of private public operation and their overlapping activities, it would open up new challenges to the Directorate. The need of the hour is to strengthen the Directorate in terms of intelligence generation and its flow among security organizations, and not merely confining itself to information exchange, he added.
Shri Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary said that he would expect the DCPW to undertake diversified activities and functions which will strengthen the Home Ministry in countering the threats posed by anti social and anti national elements. He said that the needful will be done to make the Directorate as a frontal body in various developmental and home land security activities of the country.
The Directorate came into existence on February 19, 1946 initially as “Inspectorate of Wireless” and was later accorded the status of Directorate of Coordination Police Wireless, a subordinate Organization, under Ministry of Home Affairs in 1950. It is entrusted with the responsibility of coordinating for developing and establishing the Police Telecommunication network in the country and also to advise MHA on all Police Telecommunication matters.
The DCPW is a nodal advisory body to the Ministry of Home Affairs for the Police Telecommunication in the country and for laying down technical specifications for communication equipment to be inducted in the Police Forces in the Country. It acts as a nodal agency for coordinating various police communication services of States/UTs/ CAPFs. Radio communication security matters for all State/UTs Police and CAPFs are also coordinated by DCPW. It is a member of advisory body for frequency allocation to Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing (WPC) of the Department of Communication and IT.
The DCPW operates a round-the-clock Inter State Police Wireless (ISPW) Network through its 31 stations in all States capitals/UTs for delivering emergent messages pertaining to law and order. It has an extensive network of Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSATs) spread over the entire country and extending connectivity to all district/state head quarters and National Capital Delhi through its satellite based network namely Police Network (POLNET). This satellite based network has been actively involved in facilitating communication among various State Police/Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs). The Directorate has an established High Frequency (HF) communication network at its HQ and Inter-State Police Wireless (ISPW) stations located in all State capitals and UTs.
