LT CDR Vikash Kumar Narwal, 05433-Y
On 03 Aug 15, Lt Cdr Vikash Kumar Narwal was undertaking a check test flight of MiG-29K aircraft (Frame number 802). The aircraft experienced major air frame damage, wherein, the major portion of right flap had sheared off, causing excessive loss of control over the aircraft. The Emergency happened at base leg turning point at a height of only 1200 feet, which caused secondary damage to right horizontal stabilizer and right rudder. This further caused difficulty in direction maintenance on finals as well as during initial part of landing. Facing a non-standard emergency at low level, the officer, in the face of impending peril, with exemplary professionalism, exhibited quick presence of mind, accomplished the daunting task of handling the emergency and landed the aircraft safely at INS Hansa, with multiple structural damages onboard.
The officer while handling this grave emergency displayed utmost professional competence and utter disregard to his personal safety by choosing not to eject. The officer through unflinching bravery, stellar devotion to duty and unabating tenacity avoided air crash, thereby averted major catastrophe in the city of Goa and saved lives of numerous civilians in the vicinity of airfield, damage to property and most importantly safety of the fighter aircraft.
Lt Cdr Vikash Kumar Narwal thus displayed courage of exemplary order, conspicuous gallantry and outstanding professionalism with scant regard to the safety of his own life and has therefore been awarded Nau Sena Medal (Gallantry).

NAO Sena Medal (Gallantry)
Veer Singh, CPO CD I, 122676-K
Dornier IN-240 had ditched, off Karwar, in Mar 15 and lay at depth of 58m. CCDT(MBI) was tasked for recovery of fuselage as also the mortal remains of the personnel likely to be entrapped therein. Diving to this depth was beyond both the qualification depth of clearance divers, viz, 55m and the equipment available viz 50m. The depth also posed danger of Nitrogen Narcosis that impairs the diver's judgment and imposed bottom time restrictions and decompression penalty. Further, the mangled condition of wreck posed danger of snagging/damaging diver's equipment and was also partially sunk in loose mud that posed problems of extracting the bodies within limited dive time. Sensing the urgency and importance of the task at hand, Veer Singh ,CPO CD-I (122676-k), Squadron Chief, salvage squadron of this unit, led his team by personal example showing raw courage and devotion to purpose. He dived repeatedly for location of the wreck and thereafter for salvage of the wreck even exceeding the stipulated limiting line exposing him to great danger. He personally recovered both the bodies as well as the Flight data recorder (black box) by innovatively gaining access to them through the damaged fuselage by sheer strength and brute force. His courage, grit and determination, quickly percolated to other members of his team leading to successful accomplishment of the task and brought closure to the families of the deceased aircrew and aided investigation through recovery of black box.
The task was a test of his mental aptitude and physical courage required to complete this very difficult task under dangerous conditions. His gallant actions aided in not only handing over the mortal remains to the families of the deceased aircrew but also aided investigation. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that the depth he dived posed danger of Nitrogen Narcosis that impairs the diver' judgment and imposed bottom time restrictions and decompression penalty.
The sailor displayed indomitable courage, conspicuous gallantry of a very high order in daring to dive under the most trying circumstances in line of duty and therefore, Veer Singh, CPOCDI (122676-k) has been awarded Nao Sena Medal (Gallantry).

President Confers Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) to Squadron Leader Bhavesh Kumar Dubey Administration / Air Traffic Controller
1. Squadron Leader Bhavesh Kumar Dubey Administration/Air Traffic Controller is the Commanding Officer of an Indian Air Force Special Forces Unit since 06 May 2013.
2. On 02 Jan 2016, he was leading a Squad of IAF Special Forces for a search operation at Air Force Station, Pathankot. UAV Contact with four suspects was reported to him at about 0245 hrs inside MES Yard. Squadron Leader Bhavesh Kumar Dubey showed keen situational awareness in estimating that the terrorists were in close proximity to the residential area. He immediately deployed his forces to lay a cordon. While searching the area, his team came under intense hostile fire from the terrorists, in which one of his team members was grievously injured. Maintaining his composure, he effectively marshalled his troops, spreading them out in the area to contain the terrorists within a designated area.
3. Despite a gunshot wound on the right thigh, he led from the front and along with his buddies, continued to fight with four terrorists at extremely close range. He was able to contain them at the same spot for 25 minutes till arrival of reinforcements, thereby preventing them from entering residential area and creating a possible hostage situation. He was singularly responsible for wrenching the initiative from the terrorists, thwarting their plan and forcing them on the defensive. He evacuated his injured buddy and returned to action immediately. He continued to lead his troops till the conclusion of the operation on 07 Jan 16.
4. The steadfast leadership and raw courage displayed by the officer was inspirational. His decision to aggressively engage the terrorists at the outset and confine them to a specific area proved to be the game changer in the containing the terrorists to a very limited area.
5. For this act of exceptional courage, Squadron Leader Bhavesh Kumar Dubey is awarded of Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry).

President Confers Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) to Squadron Leader Abhishek Singh Tanwar Flying (Pilot)
1. Squadron Leader Abhishek Singh Tanwar (28211) Flying (Pilot) is on the posted strength of a Sukhoi-30 MKI Squadron since 14 Jul 14 as Sqn Pilot.
2. On 06 Jan 16, Sqn Ldr AS Tanwar was authorised to fly a valley flying sortie as No. 2. During the sortie, the pilot experienced multiple failures in quick succession while in the valley with difficult terrain all around. At first he experienced oil system failure after approximately 20 mins of flying. He took correct actions and set course towards base for a priority recovery. Subsequently he experienced "Fire on Left Hand (LH) Engine". The pilot immediately switched off the left engine and operated the fire extinguisher. This was followed by all four channels of the Fly By Wire (FBW) system failing accompanied with vicious oscillation due to autonomous movement of the rudder. This coupled with Fire on LH engine presented the pilot with an emergency of the most critical nature.
3. Despite experiencing multiple emergencies of dire nature, displaying exceptional courage, Sqn Ldr AS Tanwar calmly assessed the situation and reacted in a controlled manner while remaining with the aircraft. His prompt and correct actions prevented a Category-I accident and saved the valuable aircraft. In having piloted the aircraft under such odds and executed correct emergency actions, Sqn Ldr AS Tanwar displayed courage and presence of mind of a high order.
4. For this act of exceptional courage, Squadron Leader Abhishek Singh Tanwar is awarded of Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry).

The President Confers Ashok Chakra to 13622536n Havildar Hangpan Dada (Posthumous) of the Assam Regiment / 35th Battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles
On the eve of Independence Day, the President and Supreme Commander of Indian Armed Forces has awarded Ashok Chakra, the peacetime highest award for gallantry to (13622536N) Havildar Hangpan Dada of the Assam Regiment/35th Battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles (Posthumous). Havildar Hangpan Dada showed exemplary courage, selfless devotion and conspicuous gallantry beyond the call of duty during an encounter with a group of terrorist in J&K and killed three of them before attaining martyrdom.
On 26 May 2016, when terrorists managed to break contact with our stops at Naugam Sector in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, Late Havildar Hangpan Dada along with his section was tasked to chase and trap fleeing terrorists. Displaying ingenuity and understanding of ground, the ex-commando moved with incredible speed in inhospitable snow bound high altitude terrain. This move blocked the escape route of the terrorists and surprised them.
In the ensuing firefight, when his section was pinned down by heavy and accurate fire, with utter disregard to his own safety he moved to a flank and closed in with the terrorists sheltered in rocks and boulders, resulting in saving lives of his comrades. He displayed exemplary courage and presence of mind and killed two terrorists at close quarters. In the exchange of fire, he was grievously injured. Undeterred, the NCO went after the remaining terrorists. In the process, he came face to face with the third terrorist whom he killed in hand to hand combat before making the supreme sacrifice. Thus, Havildar Hangapan Dada killed three terrorists in the operation singlehandedly and his action led to elimination of the fourth terrorist.
