INS Astradharini Joins The
Indian Navy
An indigenously built Torpedo
Launch and Recovery Vessel ‘INS Astradharini’, was commissioned today, 06th
October 2015 by Vice Admiral Satish Soni, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Naval
Command at an impressive ceremony held at the Naval Base, Visakhapatnam.
Distinguished Scientist Dr. V Bhujanga Rao, Director General (NS &M) DRDO,
Shri CD Malleswar, Director NSTL, Visakhapatnam, Mr. Sahay Raj, CMD of M/s.
Shoft Shipyard Pvt. Ltd, Bharuch, Gujarat and various other dignitaries were
also present during the commissioning ceremony.
Vice Admiral Satish Soni was received on arrival at the Naval Jetty by Commodore KA Bopanna, the Naval Officer-in-Charge (Andhra Pradesh) and was presented a Guard. The inaugural address was delivered by the Mr. Sahay Raj, CMD of M/s. Shoft Shipyard Pvt. Ltd. which was followed by address of Shri CD Malleswar, Director, NSTL and Distinguished Scientist Dr. V Bhujanga Rao, Director General (NS &M), DRDO. The NOIC(AP) also addressed the gathering which was followed by reading out of the Commissioning Warrant of the Ship by Commanding Officer, Commander Deepak Singh Bist. Subsequently, hoisting of the Naval Ensign onboard for the first time and ‘Breaking of the Commissioning Pennant’ with the National Anthem being played marked the completion of the Commissioning Ceremony.
Addressing the gathering later, the Chief Guest Vice Admiral Satish Soni congratulated the NSTL for their contribution in partnering the Shipyard through the ship building and trials process which have contributed towards building this fine ship. He said that the induction of INS Ashtradharini adds thrust to the Nation’s ongoing endeavours at indigenisation and achieving the nation’s goal of self-reliance in under water weapons development. He later unveiled the commissioning Plaque and dedicated the ship to the nation.
The design of the Astradharini was a collaborative effort of NSTL, M/s Shoft Shipyard and IIT Kharagpur and has a unique design of a catamaran hull form that significantly reduces its power requirement and is built with indigenous steel. Having a length of 50 m, the vessel is capable to do speeds up to 15 Knots. It can operate at high sea states and has a large deck area with Torpedo Launchers for deploying and recovering various kinds of torpedos during the trials. The ship also has modern power generation and distribution, navigation and communication systems. The unique hull form of the ship demonstrates the country’s ship design and shipbuilding capabilities. It is a matter of pride that 95% of the ship’s systems are of indigenous design thus demonstrating the Navy’s continued adherence to the ‘Make in India’ philosophy.
INS Astradharini will be used to carry out the technical trials of underwater weapons and systems developed by NSTL, a naval systems laboratory of DRDO. It is an advanced replacement for Astravahini which was decommissioned on 17th July 2015.
It has a complement of 02 officers and 27 sailors; Astradharini is can accommodate 13 DRDO scientists and has the capacity to undertake multiple trials during a single sortie. The commissioning of INS Astradharini will add a powerful punch to the DRDO's R&D capabilities and will accelerate the development of underwater weapons and systems.

Rear Admiral SV Bhokare takes
over as Eastern Fleet Commander

Singh, VSM, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet has handed over the command
of Eastern Fleet to Rear Admiral SV Bhokare, YSM, NM. The change of guard took
place at an impressive ceremony held today, 06 October 15 in Naval Base,
Visakhapatnam.
Rear Admiral SV Bhokare is a specialist in Navigation and Aircraft Direction and a graduate of National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla and Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. He has also undergone Higher Command Course at Army War College, Mhow. In addition, the Flag Officer holds a Masters degree in Defence and Strategic Studies from the Australian Defence College, Canberra. For his distinguished service, the Admiral has been awarded the Yudh Seva Medal and the Nao Sena Medal.
A submariner by profession, Rear Admiral Bhokare has commanded submarines Sindhughosh, Sindhudhwaj, Sindhushastra, Indian Naval Ship Beas and INS Vajrabahu. He has also held various prestigious Staff and Operational appointments including Command of Submarine Squadron as Commodore Commanding Submarines (West) and Chief Staff Officer (Operations) at Eastern Naval Command. Prior taking over the command Eastern Fleet, he was serving as Flag Officer Submarines.
The Eastern Fleet today comprises 30 warships, which include Destroyers, Stealth Frigates, Amphibious Ships, Anti Submarine Warfare Corvette, Missile Corvettes, Offshore Patrol Vessels, Missile Boats and Tankers. Rear Admiral AB Singh now moves to Delhi to assume duties at HQ Strategic Forces Command.
