The importance of
public spaces in urban areas has been stressed on the occasion of World Habitat
Day today.
Speaking at a programme organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation today, the Secretary Dr. Nandita Chatterjee said that the public spaces enhance community cohesion, social interaction and play decisive role in attracting investment and economic opportunities. The green public spaces also help in carbon emission reduction and thus help in environment protection. She said that the UN-Habitat has identified Sustainable Development Goals which stress on ensuring universal access to safe, inclusive and accessible, green public spaces, in particular for women and children, older persons and persons with disabilities in urban areas by 2030.
The UN Habitat Deputy Executive Director, Ms. Aisa Kirabo Kacyira said that the purpose of World Habitat Day is to reflect on the state of towns and cities, and on the basic right of all to adequate shelter and integration of public spaces and streets into city planning.
Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation and National Remote Sensing Centre of Hyderabad exchanged Memorandum of Understanding which is aimed at providing the required technological help for the implementation of Housing For All scheme. Space technology tools are to be used for monitoring mission especially individual/beneficiary led construction of houses. A mobile application is also expected to be built for taking geo-tagged photographs of existing houses with beneficiary and also to monitor the progress of construction of dwelling units by taking periodic photographs.
Senior officials from both the Urban Ministries and Heads of PSUs, Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO), National Cooperative Housing Federation of India (NCHF), National Housing Bank (NHB) and Building Materials Technology Promotion Council (BMTPC) participated in the programme.
As a pre-cursor to the event, HUDCO and BMTPC organized painting competitions for street and shelter less children and differently-abled children. NHB conducted skit competition for students of professional colleges. The winners of these competitions were presented awards during the function. NHB, HPL, NCHF, BMTPC and HUDCO released special publications during the function.
