Meeting of the Consultative Committee of Parliament for Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation held in Delhi
A meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation was held here on the subject of Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin). Presided over by the Minister of Drinking Water and Sanitation Shri Birender Singh, the meeting reviewed the physical progress achieved in the field of Sanitation and underlined the need to achieve the goal of Open Defecation Free(ODF) India by October 2019 with full people’s participation. The Minister said that rural sanitation coverage has increased to 51.53 % as on 31.03.2016 in comparison to 42.05%, when the Swachh Bharat Mission was launched on 2nd October 2014. He informed the Members of Parliament that the progress in sanitation has witnessed a spurt since the launch of the Mission and around 182.62 lakh toilets have already been constructed including 10.72 lakh under MGNREGS as on 31.03.2016. He said that 13 Districts, 161 Blocks, 22,513 Gram Panchayats and 53,973 villages have been declared ODF up to 31.03.2016.

The meeting was attended by the following Members of Parliament:

Shri Bhairon Prasad Mishra, Shri Charanjeet Singh Rori, Shri Hukumdev Narayan Yadav, Smt Krishna Raj, Shri Liladharbhai Khodaji Vaghela, Shri Satya Pal Singh, Shri Pankaj Chowdhary, Shri Prabhubhai Nagarbhai Vasava, Shri Rajendra Agarwal, Shri Rangaswamy Dhruvanarayana, Smt Riti Pathak, Shri Shivaji Adhalrao Patil and Shri Sunil Baliram Gaikwad all from the Lok Sabha and Shri Meghraj Jain and Shri Oscar Fernandes from the Rajya Sabha.

The Members of Parliament came out with various suggestions and the Union Minister assured to look into the suggestions.

The Minister of State for Panchayati Raj Shri Nihal Chand, Minister of State for Drinking Water and Sanitation Shri Ram Kripal Yadav, Minister of State for Rural Development Shri Sudarshan Bhagat and senior officials of Ministry of Drinking Water and Saniattion, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj and officials from Chhattisgarh and Assam also attended the meeting.
