Indian Railways Identifies Nine Corridors
for Semi High Speed Trains
Nine corridors i.e. Delhi-Agra, Delhi-Chandigarh, Delhi-Kanpur,
Nagpur-Bilaspur, Mysore-Bengaluru-Chennai, Mumbai-Goa, Mumbai-Ahmedabad,
Chennai-Hyderabad & Nagpur-Secunderabad have been identified for raising
the speeds of passenger trains to 160/200 kmph.
The first passenger train at 160 kmph will be run from New Delhi to
Agra.
The limit of speed of trains is regulated in accordance with the
classification of routes having particular type of track structure. The broad gauge (BG) lines on Indian Railways
have been classified into six groups ‘A’ to ‘E’ on the basis of the future
maximum permissible speed.
Group ‘A’- Speeds upto 160 kmph.
Group ‘B’-Speeds upto 130 kmph
Group ‘C’- Suburban section of Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi & Calcutta
Group ‘D’ special & ‘D’- Speeds upto 110 kmph
Group ‘E’- Speeds upto 100 kmph.
The total expenditure on upgradation works for Delhi-Agra section
including fencing at vulnerable locations is estimated to be Rs. 16.35 crore.

Indian Railways to Eliminate All Level
Crossings Progressively
At present, there are 30348 level crossings on Indian Railways across
the country. Out of these, 18785 are manned and 11563 are unmanned level
crossings.
A total number of 4792 level crossings have been removed on Indian
Railways in the last five years.
These jobs are being done by respective
Zonal Railways. The Ministry of Railways has decided to progressively eliminate
all level crossings by either of the following methods based on the
availability of funds:

Closure – Closing unmanned level crossings having NIL/negligible Train
Vehicle Units (TVU).
·
Merger – Merger of unmanned level crossing gate to nearby manned or
unmanned gates or subway or Road Under Bridge (RUB) or Road Over Bridge (ROB)
by construction of diversion road.
· Provision of Subways/RUBs.
·
Manning – The unmanned level crossings which cannot be eliminated by
above means will be progressively manned based on rail-road traffic volume,
visibility conditions.
·
Provision of ROBs – Busy manned level crossings having TVU more than 1
lakh are being replaced by ROBs on cost sharing basis.

Indian Railways Extends Concession in Fare
to 50 Categories of Travellers
Indian Railways extendS travel concessions
in various classes of travel to more than 50 categories of travelers, such as
patients, students, senior citizens, certain categories of disabled persons,
Doctors, Artists, Sports persons, Press Correspondents, Kisans and others. The
element of concession ranges from 10% to 100%.
Eleven categories of patients suffering
from serious ailments viz. Cancer, Thalassemia, Haemophilia, T.B/Lupas
Valgaris, Non-infectious Leprosy, AIDS patients for treatment/periodical checkup,
Heart patients for surgery, Kidney patients for kidney transplant
Operation/Dialysis and Ostomy patients for any purpose are eligible for
concessions in the passenger fares.
In the case of eight categories of
patients, travel concessions are also given to the attendant escorting the
patients.

Indian Railways to Introduce Wi-Fi Services
at 400 Stations
Indian Railways proposes to introduce Wi-Fi
services at 400 railway stations (‘A1’ & ‘A’ category) throughout the
country and in select trains.
Wi-Fi facility in three rakes of Howrah
Rajdhani Express has been provided as a pilot project and Railway further
proposes to provide this facility in select trains (Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duranto
Category). This facility will be provided selecting suitable technology for
continuous connectivity with the World Wide Web when the train is on move.
Presently, provision of Wi-Fi facility at
75 ‘A1’ category stations is in progress. Wi-Fi facility in three rakes of
Howrah Rajdhani Express has already been commissioned. Provision of Wi-Fi
Broadband facility in other select trains involves bandwidth from Indian Space
Research Organization (ISRO) and modification in Power Cars to house satellite
antenna and associated equipments. It will take 18-24 months for completion,
subject to availability of funds.
Wi-Fi at Bengaluru station has been
commissioned in October 2014. For the balance A1 category stations, work is in
progress and is likely to e commissioned in the next 12 months and subsequently
work in A category stations will be taken up.

Suresh Prabhu Directs to Undertake a
Comprehensive Study on Generating Revenue Through Advertisements on Coaches,
Wagons Trains, Railway Stations Etc.
With a view to generate additional revenue,
the Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu has directed RITES, a
public sector undertaking of Ministry of Railway, to quickly study and prepare
a Concept Note, indicating ways and means for leveraging of space in coaches,
wagons, trains, railway stations etc. for advertisements, publicity and other
purposes.
It has later felt that Indian Railways have
a lot of idle space in coaches, wagons, trains, railway stations etc which
could be used for this purpose. The Railway Minister desired that Concept Note
may be prepared at the earliest, preferably by 10th December 2014.

Suresh Prabhu Directs to Develop Sops for
Quick Evacuation of Injured Persons from Railway\Tracks to Save Human Lives
The Minister of Railways Shri Suresh
Prabhakar Prabhu has directed the Railway Board to put in place Standard
Operating Procedures (SOPs) regarding quick evacuation of the injured persons
from the railway track so that human lives are saved. The Railway Minister also
desired for putting place a system-drive frame work to ensure compliance of
SOPs by all concerned.
The Railway Minister has taken serious note
of recent media reports indicating that there have been instances of delays in
evacuation of injured persons from railway tracks because of lack of
jurisdictional clarity and other issues, often resulting in fatalities. Hence,
this issue needs to be examined and SOP is to be prepared.
This exercise may be completed by 31st
December 2014.
