Goa All Set to Host 46th IFFI;
Curtain Lifts Tomorrow
The stage is set
for the 46th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) that unfolds tomorrow
amidst genial surroundings and mesmerizing scenic beauty of the beach state of
Goa. The 11-day cinematic extravaganza promises to dissolve boundaries of
caste, creed, thought, religion as well as nations and puts humanity in the
forefront through its storylines. Cinema being a collaborative art, films
offers a combination of hundreds of trades and almost all art forms through
their imagery, sound, characters and storytelling techniques.
The IFFI-2015 offers a bouquet of Indian as well of World Cinema to enthrall film makers and film lovers with beautiful stories, impressive acting performances and new techniques in filmmaking. Of 384 films received from different regions of the country including 238 Feature and 146 Non-Feature films, the Indian Panorama section will screen 26 feature and 21 non-feature films during the festival.
The IFFI 2015 awards spread across different categories including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor – Male, Best Actor – Female, Special Jury Award, Centenary Award, Lifetime Achievement Award and Centenary Award- Indian Personality of the Year.
The Festival package includes Homages to eminent filmmakers and actors who passed away, Festival Kaleidoscope, Master Stroke and Country Focus. The Kingdom of Spain is the focus country of IFFI 2015.
The festival is organizing a Special Retrospective on the legendry actor Shashi Kapoor.
IFFI 2015 in collaboration with the International Council for Film, Television and Audio visual Communication (ICFT), Paris and UNESCO will present the “ICFT- UNESCO Fellini Prize” to a film.
For the first time, IFFI will be recognizing young talents from the world of cinema under its new segment - First Cut that will showcase some of the outstanding works of debutant directors of 2015.
Focusing on skill building in filmmaking and enhancing talents, IFFI in association with the Oscar Academy will organize master classes with eminent Academy Members including Mark Mangini, Milt Shefter and Humphrey Dixon.

Ramanujan’s Passion for Mathematics Shown in the Film will Appeal to the Masses: Matthew L Brown
The Director and
writer, cast and crew of the opening film “The Man Who Knew Infinity”
interacted with the press at the Kala Academy here today. The film is based on
the true story of friendship between the Indian mathematics genius Ramanujan
and his professor G H Hardy at the Trinity College, Cambridge and how Professor
Hardy worked to reveal the true genius of the great mathematician.
Writer and Director of the film Matthew L Brown, Actor Dev Patel, Actor Toby Jones, Producer Edward Ramback Pressman, Producer Joe Thomas, Devika Bhise-actress playing the role of Janki and Swati Bhise, Associate Producer(India) for Cultural Authenticity and distributor for the Indian sub-continent were present at today’s press conference.
In their opening brief, the celebrities felt privileged and excited to be a Part of 46th IFFI. "Slumdog kid" Dev Patel of the ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ fame is the protagonist in the film.
Actor Dev Patel said “I feel lucky enough to be a part of this project and bring Ramanujan back to the people of India.” Replying to a question received on PIB’s twitter handle Dev Patel replied “In real life, my maths is 'terrible'.”
Replying to a question , Matthew L Brown, said it has been a long journey that took ten years from conceiving to writing ,directing and to be a part of the IFFI 2015 here. More than science it was the human emotions that led to the making of the film, he added. In Response to a question about the mass appeal of a subject like maths chosen for the film, Mat Brown said that the passion for Mathematics in the character Ramanujan will appeal to the masses.
Earlier, introducing the cast and crew, Swati Bhise said “Matthew L Brown brings Ramanujan to India, just as Attenborough brought Gandhiji through his film 'Gandhi'.” She informed that Mathew took 8-9 years to conceive and script the film as he wrote it after a lot of research on Ramanujan’s life and keeping in mind the sensitivities and complexities of South Indian lives.
The Man Who Knew Infinity is the true story of a friendship that forever changed mathematics. In 1913, Ramanujan (Dev Patel), a self-taught Indian mathematics genius travelled to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he forged a bond with his mentor, the eccentric professor G.H. Hardy (Jeremy Irons), and fought against prejudice to reveal his mathematical genius to the world.
The film is based on the biography of the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan ‘The Man Who Knew Infinity: A Life of the Genius Ramanujan’ written in 1991 by Robert Kanigel. The film had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival this year, and was also shown at the Zurich film festival.

As the curtain
goes up on IFFI 2015 tomorrow, many fringe activities are also being organised
on the side lines of the Film Festival to provide a unique and lasting
experience to the visitors here. One such initiative is IFFI Palate
International Food Village that will be held, in Goa from 20th to 23rd November,
2015. The gourmet food village is being set up in the beautiful forest park
right opposite the Maquinez Palace and INOX which is the throbbing heart of
IFFI activity .
Addressing a press conference in the IFFI Media Centre, Maquinez Palace here today, Shri Ameya Abhyankar, CEO, Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) said that the food festival will be a lasting and enduring engagement for people during the festival. He said that the cost of cuisines in this festival has been kept low to make it an ‘inclusive festival’. This food festival is a part of the overall eco system of IFFI festival and will provide wholesome entertainment to the families, he added. He also disclosed that the food festival is being sponsored by Air Asia. Shri Ameya Abhyankar also said that special attention will be given to cleanliness and hygiene at the venue.
Ms Aditi Kapoor and Ms Ruchi Sibal, Directors of the Palate Fest Pvt. Ltd and organisers of the IFFI Palate International Food Village also addressed the conference. Speaking on the occasion, Ms Aditi Kapoor said that India is now ready for such types of festivals. Ms Ruchi Sibal informed that many exciting events have been planned at the food festival like public art by Goan artists and music etc. She also said that this festival is a ‘Goan version of the Palate Festival ’.
The festival presents an equally enticing opportunity to Goan food lovers and IFFI delegates to sample gourmet food catered by the best Indian culinary brands. Film, art and food connoisseurs will be able to steep themselves into an extraordinary culinary experience at the IFFI Palate International Food Village.
Some of the country’s premier restaurants and eateries including the Olive Bar to Fat Lulus, Delhi Chutney Co, Chaayos, Big Fat Sandwich, Thalassa and more will be setting up pop-up restaurants at the IFFI Palate International Food Village. Other brands who have partnered with this unique initiative include Cup Noodles, Giani, Lite Bites, Cazulo Feni and Edward’s Yard among others.
Integrating fine cuisine with art, three outstanding artists Dhiraj Pednekar, Katharina Poggendorf – Kakar and Subodh Kerkar will be setting up interesting installations at the IFFI Palate International Food Village. The installations titled ‘BIOSCOPE’ by Dhiraj Pednekar, ‘INFINITE SHAKTI’ by Katharina Poggendorf–Kakar and CHICKEN CAFREAL by Subodh Kerkar will be on exhibit. An interesting line-up of entertainment has been planned for the festival, which includes live music acts through the evening.

Information & Broadcasting has set up a Toll Free Telephone Number
1-800-180-4343 to answer queries of stakeholders, including consumers, for
seamless transition to digitization . To begin with the queries can be answered
in 8 Indian languages - Hindi, English, Bangla, Gujarati, Marathi, Telugu,
Tamil & Kannada.
After the completion of first two phases of Cable TV Digitisation, which covered 4 metros (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai) and 38 cities having population more than 10 lakh each, Phase III of digitisation is underway. It would cover all the remaining urban areas in the country and is to be completed by 31st Dec 2015.
Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has been facilitating the smooth switchover to digitization. In this connection a list of urban areas to be covered in Phase III has been finalized in consultation with the State/Union Territory Governments. This list is available on the Ministry’s websites (www.mib.nic.in and www.DigitalIndiaMIB.com). A Task Force has been constituted which is meeting every month to take stock of the progress. State and Union Territory Governments have nominated State level and district level nodal officers for coordination work. 10 workshops have been conducted by the Ministry of I&B at regional level to sensitise the nominated nodal officers about their role in the digitisation process. 12 regional units have also been set up by the Ministry for effective coordination. Secretary (I&B) has requested all the Chief Secretaries to set up Monitoring Committees to review preparedness for digitisation. Broadcasters as well as MSOs have launched public awareness campaign. MIS software has been made operational for collection of seeding status of Set Top Boxes (STBs) online from registered Multi System Operators (MSOs), Direct To Home (DTH) and Headend In the Sky (HITS) operators.
