Shri Piyush Goyal Launches “Star Rating” Mobile App on National Energy Conservation Day

Shri Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of State (IC) for Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy said “this is the time each and every one of us takes it upon ourselves and pledge to the world in a mission mode to strengthen and redouble our efforts to become a more conscious country. Each one of us has to decide their contribution in saving the climate and in my mind; I do not doubt the fact that India will fulfill its INDC commitments. It’s the only way successfully leaving behind for the next generation a cleaner planet, healthier future, a more prosperous nation to live in. I am sure I will keep on getting your support in making India a more energy secure nation in future.” Shri Goyal said this while speaking at National Energy Conservation Day function here today. 


The Minister also launched ‘Star Rating’ mobile app on the occasion. This app is linked to the Standards and Labeling database and provides the user a platform to compare personalized energy saving devices across the same class and get a real-time feedback from consumers and other stakeholders so they can make an informed purchase decision. Apart from being a one-stop solution for customers, it’s also a valuable tool for policymakers to access the accumulated data and analyse the feedback of the market at any given point in time. The app can be downloaded from the play store of any android and iOS operated smart phones.

Shri Piyush Goyal distributed the prizes to industries, commercial buildings, railways and establishments to recognize their efforts towards adoption of energy efficient technologies and practices in their units who made the cut in adopting energy efficient practices, thereby reducing wastage and costs. Along with presenting the awards to the energy performers, Shri Goyal also gave away the prizes to the first three position holders of the painting competition that was held at the school, state and national level. Elated with the children’s artworks, Shri Piyush Goyal congratulated the winners saying, “It’s inspiring to see that our efforts towards energy conservation are having a tangible impact on these young minds. Their imaginative paintings are proof that they are concerned about climate change and determined to make a difference. What better way than for them to lead the process of change and create growing awareness for our scarce natural resources”.

Various industries including drugs and pharma, cement, BPOs, offices, universities, automobile manufacturing, hospitals, consumer goods, dairy, electricity distribution companies, fertilizers, petrochemicals, zonal railways, malls, soaps and detergents, textiles, thermal power stations, Financial Institutions, ESCOs, DISCOMs and many more participated in the Award function this year. The event was organized by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) as a part of National Energy Conservation Day celebrations.

Union Power Secretary, Shri P K Pujari in his welcome address congratulated the Award Winners for their innovative steps to conserve energy. He said that that efficient use of energy resources and their conservation assumes tremendous significance for the economy today.

The function was attended by Additional Secretaries , Ministry of Power Shri B.P .Pandey , Shri B.N. Sharma , Shri Major Singh , Chairman C.E.A and Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director General, Bureau of Energy Efficiency apart from the officers of various Ministries and CPSUs .

Power Shortage Reduced to 2.4% in Current Year; Several Steps Taken to Increase Availabilty of Power 
The energy shortage has reduced from 8.5% in 2011-12 to 2.4% in the current year i.e. 2015-16 (upto October, 2015), which is the lowest ever. Further, the peak shortage has reduced from 10.6% in 2011-12 to 3.2% during the current year i.e. 2015-16 (upto October, 2015), which is also all time lowest. This was stated by Shri Piyush Goyal, Minister of State (IC) for Power, Coal & New and Renewable Energy (IC) in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha today. The Minister further stated the steps have been taken to meet the gap:

(i) Capacity addition of 1,18,537 MW (including 88,537 MW conventional and 30,000 MW renewable) during the 12th Plan, i.e. by 2016-17. As against this, about 70,480 MW from conventional sources has been achieved till 7.12.2015 and about 13,204 MW from renewable sources till 31.10.2015.

(ii) Construction of 1,07,440 ckm transmission lines and setting up of 2,82,740 MVA transformation capacity during the 12th Plan, i.e. by 2016-17. As against this, 76,490 ckm of transmission lines and 2,19,730 MVA of transformation capacity have been achieved till November, 2015.

(iii) Government of India has taken initiative to prepare State specific Action Plans for providing 24X7 Power For All (PFA) in partnership with the States.

(iv) Two new schemes are being implemented by the Government of India, namely, Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojna and Integrated Power Development Scheme for strengthening of sub-transmission and distribution networks and for segregation of agricultural feeders to give adequate and reliable supply and reduce line losses.

(v) Promotion of energy conservation, energy efficiency and other demand side management measures.

(vi) Central Government has notified a new scheme namely Ujjawal Discom Assurance Yojana (UDAY) on 20.11.2015 for Operational & Financial Turnaround of Discoms.

(vii) Expeditious resolution of issues relating to Environmental and forest clearances for facilitating early completion of generation and transmission projects.

(viii) Providing support from Power System Development Fund for stranded gas based generation.

The power projects under construction which are likely to be ready by the end of 2019 are around 86,363 MW capacity comprising of 72,326 MW from Thermal, 9,737 MW from Hydro and 4,300 MW from Nuclear sources, the Minister added.

“Andaman and Nicobar to become Green Islands”- Shri Piyush Goyal

Reaches out to school children across the country 
Shri Piyush Goyal, Minister of State (IC) for Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy, announced here today that Andaman and Nicobar Islands will soon be converted into green islands . Shri Goyal said this while interacting with school children across the country through video link at the National Energy Conservation Day function .

School children from 13 cities namely Shimla, Bhopal, Gandhi Nagar, Port Blair, Thiruvananthapuram, Raipur, Pune, Jalandhar, Agartala, Guntur, Patna, Itanagar and Guwahati participated in the interactive session.

The Minister proposed to create a mobile application for auditing energy efficiency and said that with the help of mobile app every student can become energy auditor. The suggestion to this effect came from a student Bal Shiksha Niketan , School , Shimla.

Shri Goyal also answered query put forward by students from Guntur about rural electrification. He said that the draft of Scheme for providing solar street lights in rural areas is under active consideration of the Ministry and would be finalized soon.

The Minister accepted the feedback of a student from Thiruvananthapuram who suggested switching off the lights in the shopping malls at night for conserving power. Shri Goyal directed the officials to take up with Municipal Corporations to devise the ways to stop unnecessary wastage of energy at the shopping Malls which are located in urban areas.

Winding up the interactive video session with the students , Shri Goyal urged the students to become torch bearers of Government drive for Energy Conservation and Efficiency . Shri Goyal assured the students that he is committed to implement all the announcements made on the occasion.
